The Business Doctor
We were dubbed the Business Doctor by a client several years ago and the name stuck. When you have health issues, you go to the doctor and they run a series of tests (check your height, weight, pulse, blood pressure etc.) and based on your symptoms them make recommendations to bring you and your numbers back into the normal area and help cure your health issues.
We do the same thing by comparing various ratios and percentages gathered from your business Income Statement and Balance Sheet and compare your business number to those of other successful businesses in your industry and make recommendations accordingly. With this approach our recommendations are based on facts and not some fanciful musings that we pull out of thin air.
Over the years we’ve come to realize that successful small businesses have and need three main ingredients; First, Technical Expertise in their industry ie. if they are a car mechanic they better know how to fix cars or if they are roofers they better know how to put a good roof on at a competitive price etc. Second, they need Sufficient Capital to cover operating expenses of being in business and to buy or finance the equipment necessary to do the business. The Third ingredient is Business Acumen or the knowledge to actually run a business.

We’ve also noticed that most small business people have the Technical Expertise under control. They have or had Sufficient Capital to start the business by putting a second mortgage on their home or savings or borrowing from family etc.
However, the third component of Business Acumen we often find wanting or non-existent totally; the guy who brings a shoebox full of receipts to his income tax preparer comes to mind.
We can’t help with the Technical Expertise in their chosen industry. We might be able to help with the Sufficient Capital issue but we definitely can help
with the Business Acumen issue.
